SafetyBreaks!

SafetyBreaks! Toolkit

• SafetyBreaks! is an innovative program developed by the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office to increase youth (ages 9-14) education regarding a variety of traffic safety issues. It is available for check-out for use in the classroom, and each kit includes all tools needed for each lesson.

• SafetyBreaks! includes a 5-day curriculum of in-class education covering occupant protection, safety in and around cars, work zone/inclement weather driving information, tips to avoid aggressive, drowsy and distracted driving and underage alcohol use prevention.

• Each SafetyBreaks! lesson is taught in two parts – 15 minutes of instruction and reinforcement of the lesson through a game. Lessons also include homework assignments to involve parents in the learning process. SafetyBreaks! also partners in-class education with an online video game, “Kansas Challenge,” which students can play once lessons are completed.
• In-class education portions of SafetyBreaks! meet several Kansas Department of Education health standards for this age group.

• “Kansas Challenge” allows up to four players to compete in a road race across Kansas featuring historic Kansas landmarks. Students can play against other students in their class, their school or from other schools across the state.
